Free Screenings:

Once a year, Little Star Speech Therapy provides FREE SCREENINGS for the community, located at our clinic. The staff at Little Star donates their time and expertise to provide children with speech and language screenings to benefit families who may have concerns. The free screenings are announced here and on the Little Star Speech Therapy Facebook page.

Interested families can call our wonderful staff to book a screening, which occurs on a Saturday. After the child is screened, we provide a gift bag for all children for attending. During a free screening the family can expect:

•    To meet with the speech therapist to describe concerns (if any)

•    Therapist to perform standardised screening assessments in the areas of receptive/expressive language, speech sounds,        stuttering, voice, phonological awareness

•    Evaluation of screenings with respect to the child’s age range and normative data

•    A discussion of the results including any flagged speech or language problems

•    Recommendations including free services available in the community

Daycare, Preschool and School Screenings:

Little Star Speech Therapy provides speech pathology screenings to over 20 centers in and around Newcastle. We screen hundreds of children in daycares, preschools and primary school settings. The screenings are pre-arranged and often announced in school newsletters or meetings. Interested families can book an appointment during the screening day at the school/daycare at a minimal cost.

Parents are highly encouraged to attend the screening in order to ask direct questions to the therapist. During a screening the family can expect:

•    To meet with the speech therapist to describe concerns (if any)

•    Therapist to perform standardised screening assessments in the areas of receptive/expressive language, speech sounds,        stuttering, voice, phonological awareness

•    Evaluation of screenings with respect to the child’s age range and normative data

•    A discussion of the results including any flagged speech or language problems

•    Recommendations including free services available in the community

•    2-page written report for the parent

Screening days are popular and families benefit from having a therapist come to their school setting. The screenings provide information about the child’s speech and language at a minimal cost. If any areas are flagged, treatment options are provided. Early intervention is essential, and screenings are a wonderful tool to determine problematic areas of need.
